Augusto Rivera Garcés (b. Colombia, 1922 – 1982) was an abstract and figurative expressionist painter and muralist whose painting reflected his rebel and critical nature, particularly in denouncing the military repressive program La Violencia , the violence reducing program implemented by the State in the 1950s and 1960s. Art critic Marta Traba wrote about him Augusto Rivera is a painter almost unknown. Painting for him is a vast and complex problem the search of plastic quality, to relate in a sincere way, elemental, with the traditions of the Indians, their profound symbolism, critical, the outcome of arduous reflections… this group, perhaps over excessive, of concerns converge on the work of Rivera (Our translation) — P. [21]. Rivera won First Prize in the IV Salón Nacional, Cúcuta in1964.
