Resumen del Libro

Catalog, dated March 5, 1887 in Manila, of objects pertaining to the religion and culture of the Igorrotes, which were placed on display at the Exposición general de las islas Filipinas held in Madrid, Spain in 1887. The 141 display items document the culture and way of life of the 500,000 Philippine Igorrotes, members of the Malay racial group who occupy an extensive area of the island of Luzón including the provinces of Abra, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Ilocos, La Unión, and Pangasinan. Entries contain display numbers, native names, origens, and descriptions of such items as clay figures used in religious worship, ceremonial chairs occupied by chieftains and their wives, dishes and plates, with notes on the foods prepared by the Igorot, drinking gourds, cane and bamboo baskets, loincloths, turbans, and other articles of clothing, necklaces made of glass beads and pieces of flint, amulets, backpacks, musical instruments, and boats. The catalog also describes knives, daggers, bows and arrows, and axes, as well as various products especially cultivated by the Igorot such as rice, honey, dates, cotton, and tobacco.
