The short story narrates an episode in the life of Ramón Emeterio Betances. Upon his return from France, Dr. Betances becomes full of compassion for the lives of the slaves and the poor lacking humane treatment and medical care. He spends time in the hacienda La Margarita taking care of the sick and the victims of cholera. This experience turns him into an abolitionist and even fulfills a promise by purchasing the freedom of a baby born of a slave woman.
