A collection (originals and copies) of genealogical records, criminal proceedings, and edicts of the Inquisition, originating in New Spain, Spain, or Peru, relating to residents of Mexico. Includes genealogical material (44 p.) about Fray Luis de Solórzano, applicant for Inquisition qualificator in Mexico City (1608-1609), Bartolomé de Escoto, a Sevillian resident of Honduras (1611-1617) (22 p.), and Jerónimo Gutiérrez Montealegre, candidate for Inquisition counsellor, and Montealegres Peruvian wife, Micaela de Solier (1613-1620) (131 p.). Also contains 124 folios of documents (1617-1621) covering the Mexican Inquisitions trial of Alonso de Torres, a Negro slave charged with fraudulence and soothsaying, and certified copies of Inquisition edicts (1713-1771) on abuse of the confessional, prohibited reading matter, heresy, and superstition.
