In the fourth and final chapter of my dissertation I analyze the fragment as the beginning of Gomaras Latin translation of a revised and augmented Historia de las Indias from a structural point of view. Here I argue that the arrangement of the fragment, together with the proposal for the virtual organization of the projected masterwork that the author set forth in the introduction of the text, reveals definitively that De rebus gestis inaugurates a wide-ranging History of the New World that Francisco Lopez de Gomara planned as his magnum opus but which he never brought to fruition.
