Historia General Sacro Profana, Política Y Religiosa De Las Islas Del Poniente Llamadas Filipinas
Resumen del Libro
Unsigned copy from around 1830 of an anonymous, undated history of the Philippines, from 1492 to 1603. The history begins with chapters on the discovery of America and New Spain, and the voyage of Magellan to the Philippines, his discovery of the straits at the tip of South America, and his death on the island of Mactan during an encounter with hostile Indians. The author, probably a member of one of the religious orders, then discusses the early history of the Philippines, the new settlements that were established under governors Legazpi, Pérez Dasmariñas, and Tello de Guzmán, and further exploration and settlement of the Moluccas. He devotes several chapters to the struggles of the Spanish in the Philippines against the Portuguese and the Moro pirates, and to the church history of the islands, including missions there and in China, the arrival of the first Franciscans to the islands, the appointment of the first bishop, and the construction of the cathedral in Manila.
