Dear Sir: I have the pleasure of transmitting herewith the Summary and Conclusion of my report, which has been postponed until the completion of the maps in order to verify statements of distance. This ends my work for the Intercontinental Railway Commission. The pleasure in sending the paper comes only of another round of action complete. I thank the Commission and all its officers with whom I have had to do–the Executive Officer especially–for the honorable service assigned me, the generous freedom permitted in its discharge, and for pleasant relations throughout, such as have never been exceeded during my whole professional career. The report falls short of what it might probably have been made except for the hindrance of other duties and a naturally slow wit. I see its deficiencies better perhaps than any of its readers will. But it was wrought at faithfully. It is my best under the circumstances. That should suffice. Please convey my parting salutation and good wishes to Commander Brown, Captain Steever, Captain Macomb, Lieutenant Kennon, Mr. Flynn, Mr. Wilson, and the office at large. Yours very truly, Wm. F. Shunk. In the scheme of limits prescribed by the Commission, four per cent, was the maximum gradient and 359.3 feet (109.51 meters) the least radius of curvature permissible. A serviceable road may be built within these limits through the region explored by Corps No. 2, but at a few points, hereinbefore noted, it will be found more economical to use two engines and a steeper gradient.
