A concise review of the 1592-94 cabildo-led protest against sales taxes in the highland city of Tunja. Essay places the unsuccessful struggle for municipal autonomy and prerogatives at the convergence of tensions between indigenous peoples and colonists, creoles and peninsulars, and colony and empire created by the maturation of Spanish rule in Nueva Granada.
