Handbook containing a Huastec grammar and vocabulary, as well as devotional material, compiled by Carlos de Tapia Zenteno, probably around 1746. Preliminary materials include a justification of the work and a description of the Huastec Indians, their way of life, and their lands around Veracruz and Tamaulipas. Pages 1-69 contain Tapia Zentenos Huastec grammar, entitled Noticia de la lengua huasteca, followed by a Spanish-Huastec vocabulary, with Spanish words and phrases and their Huastec equivalents arranged in parallel columns on each page (p. 70-105). The last 40 pages present important prayers in both Spanish and Huastec, including the Pater Noster, Salve Regina, Ave Maria, and the Credo, as well as the Ten Commandments, the commandments of the Church, the Articles of Faith, the seven sacraments, and the seven deadly sins. Tapia Zenteno also includes a catechism in Huastec, based on that of Father Bartolomé Castaño, and abbreviated texts for the administration of the sacraments of baptism, confession, communion, last rites, and marriage. The confession contains questions and responses based on each of the Ten Commandments.
