He was born in the Australian state of Tasmania, and grew up on a farm in the northern part of that state, near Irishtown. He studied agricultural science at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, then went to the University of Adelaide for postgraduate study before moving to Sydney. Champions main interest is in bringing to wider attention the works of the Austrian philosopher Karl Popper and the Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek. He is also a contributor to Club Troppo and Catallaxy files, two collaborative blogs based in Australia.
