The club was founded in 1984 by members of the Glenans Irish Sailing Club, so as to promote sailing by providing shared ownership of boats. Classes sailed include Sigma 33, Ruffian, Laser Vago, 420, Magno, and Trez. Yacht Clubs are mostly located by the sea, although there are some that have been established at a lake or riverside locations. Many yacht or sailing clubs have either a marina or a delimited section of the beach or shoreline with buoys marking the areas off-limits for swimmers as well as safe offshore anchorages.
