The Sompura Brahmin are a Hindu caste found in the state of Gujarat in India. The are a sub-group of the Brahmin community. According to their traditions, they are so-called because they are said to get their name because they were created by the god Chandra to perform sacred ceremonies for the god Shiva. These sacred ceremonies are known as som yajna. They are concentrated in the town of Prabas Patan. The community are one of the oldest Brahmin community in Gujarat and speak Gujarati. Like other Brahmin communities, they consist of gotras which are exogamous. Sompuras have 18 different gotras. 11 of them spread all over Gujarat and Rajastan. Their main profession was and remains to build Temples, Derasar as per an Ancient Indian Architecture vastu shilp shastra. They are very well known as Temple Architects worldwide. Others stay near Prabhas/Somnath and their main profession was and remains panda giri (priestly services) in the temples, particularly in and around Somnath. The community are strict vegetarians, and avoid garlic and lentils.
