For the first time in one publication, this book collects Eugenio Maria de Hostos three speeches on the scientific education of women given at the Academia de Bellas Letras in Santiago, Chile, in 1873, and two other works written during his stay in the Dominican Republic in 1881.

The novel centers on an amorous passion, which the author does not develop within the typical framework of adultery. The central conflict is laden with psycho-social resonances, and demonstrates the aesthetic frontiers that Hostos was able to eclipse in his literary writing.
