In 1989, the First International Conference on the Thought of Eugenio Maria de Hostos was held in Puerto Rico. Important cultural and academic figures from Puerto Rico, as well as from other countries, participated in the conference and offered valuable contributions to the analysis of the work of this Puerto Rican thinker and patriot. Forty essays are published here to spread and to preserve these contributions. They examine and analyze Hostos work in all the fields and disciplines in which he worked, such as law, education, philosophy, literature and others. Hostos: sentido y proyeccion de su obra en America is a joint edition with the Instituto de Estudios Hostosianos of the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras, which collected, organized and revised the texts presented at the conference.
