Resumen del Libro

Collection of newspaper articles, gallery and exhibit catalogs, and booklets issued by the Pan American Union, dated between 1945 and 1950, on modern Latin American art, primarily Argentine and Uruguayan art of the 20th century. Articles on Argentine art are taken from newspapers in Buenos Aires–La Prensa, La Nación, El Hogar, Mundo Argentino–and Montevideo–Mundo Uruguayo–and discuss Argentine painting, mural painting, watercolors, sculpture, ceramics, public art, contemporary artists, galleries in Buenos Aires, especially Galerias Witcomb, and exhibits in museums in Buenos Aires (Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes), Santa Fe (Museo Rosa Galisteo de Rodriguez), and San Rafael (Museo de Bellas Artes y Biblioteca). Some stories focus on a single artist, such as Raquel Forner, the wood sculptor Elena Castro de Bordigoni, Nilson Tregor, Henri Gervèse, Alejandro Christophersen, Faustino Brughetti, Fernando Berretta, and Guillermo Calleja among many others. The articles are illustrated with art reproductions, some in color. Also included are three 1948 brochures from Galerias Witcomb, featuring work of Rodrigo Bonome, Pascual Gambino T., and Jose Malanca, and a 1948 catalog of an exhibit at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires of the work of Alejo B. Gonzalez Garaño. Similar articles on the contemporary art scene in Uruguay have been taken exclusively from the Montevideo newspaper El Día, with stories on topics such as the XI Salon de Artes Plasticas de Montevideo, VII Salon de Arte de Mar del Plata, VIII Exposicion de Artistas Plasticos del Uruguay, and Uruguayan painters including Manuel Rosé, Manuel Barthold, José Cúneo, and Carlos W. Aliseris. One double-page spread from El Dia of June 30, 1946 features the Colombian artist Gonzalez Jaramillo. A few miscellaneous articles deal with Mexican architecture, and three Latin American artists exhibiting at galleries in New York City: José Maria Velasco of Mexico, Mireya Lafuente of Chile, and…
