It takes its name from a cluster of rocks off the coast.Calvados is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from a part of the former province of Normandy. The name Orne infrieure was originally proposed for the department, but it was ultimately decided to call the area Calvados.
